Presidential Address

Hello all...This will be my first "State of the Union" email. I am going to try to send one of these out on a monthly basis. First off, I would like to thank all of the current members for electing me to this prestigious office for the upcoming 2010-2011 year. I am confident that we can continue providing exemplary information and "good times" in regards to home brewing and beer appreciation. I am very excited about the upcoming months and look forward to seeing, smelling, and of course tasting the various batches and commercial examples of the styles and interpretations of those styles from our members. I would also like to extend an invitation to all members to come up with ideas for our upcoming meetings to broaden our horizons.

Also I encourage all members that if they notice a problem or issue, please do not hesitate to contact myself or any board members so that we can rectify the situation and find solution post haste. I also ask that members volunteer for our various events, competitions, and parties in whatever capacity they can. There are numerous ways that you could lend a hand, from being a participant on a committee to just picking up the jockey boxes or paper supplies. This would greatly alleviate the workload on the members that perform these tasks on a regular basis.

      I have some goals that I would like to attain this year as well. Our membership has not seen too many new members over the past year. Does anyone have any ideas on how to increase those numbers and recruit/welcome new members? How about finding ways to bring back members that haven't attended in some time? I feel that while we may lose some individuals to the new Sunday time slot we may be able to gain some for the same reasons. To coin a popular phrase, "Membership has its privileges."

      Another suggestion would be to become involved in the community. We have addressed this briefly in the past but have not acted upon it. Volunteering for Habitat for Humanity was the topic in question. What would be the general consensus to something a long these lines? I think this would be a great idea by giving back to the community.


    Sorry to be so long winded but I wanted to introduce myself to all as well as to say thank you and to give a brief overview of what I would like to see accomplished as well as give the direction that I wish to see the club venture forth. Prost to You and Yours and I wish to have a happy and fun year.

This SUNDAY The Craft Raffle & Notes About the Meeting

Hey Crew, if anyone has been reading the Calendar, you may have noticed:

THE CRAFT RAFFLE IS THIS WEEKEND!
Bring your handmade items for the raffle!  Remember that they don't necessarily need to be beer related!  Homebrew is always a welcome raffle item too!

For the Sunday Meeting, some notes:

We will be meeting at SPORTSTIME, there is an internal NABC event going on in Prost.
For the meeting, we are keeping Sportstime smoke free (sorry if anyone's hopes were too high on this one, you will be able to smoke outside the doors just like at our Saturday meetings)
It is the Brewfood competition meeting, so there will be food, but if you would like to bring something, you are certainly encouraged.
Please bring picnic goods if you can (plates,cups, napkins, utinsils), when you can.  Anything not used will be added to the FOSSILS larder for future use.

Plan to have a good time!

August Executive Meeting -- this Thursday August 12

The summer has just flown by.  I can't believe we are already near the middle of August. School starts this week for the New Albany public schools and we should start seeing Christmas decorations going up in the stores.  Jeesh... 
This Saturday is our August FOSSILS Homebrew Club Meeting.  With elections coming in October, we will begin at this meeting by hearing speeches from those who want to run for FOSSILS office. So get your speeches prepared and let's get started on a quality election!  Also at this meeting, Dennis Stockslager will educate us on building a mash tun from commonly available parts at home.  
To prepare for this meeting and discuss plans for the future, I would like to convene an Exectutive Meeting this Thursday at 7:30pm at RichO's
We will have a number of things to talk about, including 20th Anniversary activities, bylaws revisions and updates, budget, nominations and elections, and Sunday Meeting arrangements.  As with all Executive meetings, all FOSSILS members are invited and can participate in the discussions.

Here's the short and sweet of it for those that don't want or need the details...

EVENT: Brew-B-Q 2010 – The 4th Annual Gathering of Indiana Homebrew Clubs
COST: FREE - But if you can spare a few bucks donation to help cover some expenses, that would be great.
DATE / TIME: Saturday, June 12th, 2:00 - 7:00 pm (note the later end time)
LOCATION: Sun King Brewery at 135 N. College Avenue – Near East side of downtown Indianapolis (see directions below).
Sun King's tasting hours on Saturday are from 1:00 – 4:00.  Stop in and show your support.

 Sorry for the delay on the details, but you should already have the date on your club calendar.  Next Saturday, June 12th is the FOURTH ANNUAL INDIANA HOMEBREW CLUB DAY – BREW-B-Q 2010 !!!  We hope to see another great turnout as we have in the past, with more than 100 people in attendance.  You will be glad you made the trip!
 IMPORTANT - BIG CHANGE: This year, the event will be held at Sun King Brewery near downtown Indianapolis (directions below).  Sun King is the only physical drop off point for your Brewers Cup entries and Saturday, June 12th is the first day for drop off.  So don't forget your Indiana State Fair Brewers Cup entries!!!
 Anita and her staff at Great Fermentations have been great Brew-B-Q hosts and supporters the past 3 years, so don't forget to stop by there and stock up on ingredients and supplies while you are in town.  Each year, I get asked multiple times about moving the event somewhere that has more shade, because it gets so hot on the black top behind Great Fermentations.  So, with the Brewers Cup drop off point being Sun King and them having some big trees in their South parking lot, we thought we would give it a shot.  Let's try it out this year and let me know what you think.
 Also, if you haven't visited Sun King before, their Saturday tasting hours are from 1:00 – 4:00.  Show up a little early and check this out, buy a growler, etc.  They are doing a great job, making some awesome beer, and really supporting the homebrew community.  Show them your support as well.

WHY YOU DON'T WANT TO MISS IT: One of the featured attractions for this event is clear from the name, Brew-B-Q. One of the FBI members, Frank Petrarca, has a giant smoker and cooks up some awesome smoked meats. Frank has been known to stay up all night the night before the event to prepare an incredible selection of smoked meats. Thanks Frank! Various FBI members will also be providing an assortment of chips and side dishes, but your contributions are welcomed and appreciated. Last, but certainly not least, there will be plenty of homebrew for sampling. Please bring whatever you would like to share. In previous years, several clubs have gone all out, with custom jockey boxes, many kegs of beer, etc.  Others may just show up with some bottles of homebrew in a cooler.  Both approaches are welcomed and appreciated.  What matters most, is that you attend and enjoy the day.

Some other great reasons to not miss this event include:

--- Drop off your entries for the State Fair Brewers Cup during Sun King's tasting hours (1:00 – 4:00).  Also, multiple BJCP judges will be available if you want some advice on the best category to enter your beer in.  Just bring an extra bottle or two for this evaluation and let me know.

--- Door Prizes, Door Prizes, Door Prizes – In past years, we have had tons of door prizes including Beer Guns (donated by John Blichmann), Corny Kegs and
brewing books (donated by Anita at Great Fermentations), a couple of the way-cool "Brew-B-Q" T-shirts (donated by the FBI), lots of craft beer (donated
by World Class Beverages and Barley Island), and much more.  I can't guarantee this same level of door prizes every year, but I will do my best and try to make this year's door prize list equally as impressive.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:

1) Please distribute this email to all your club members ASAP – June 12th is NEXT SATURDAY !!!

2) Review the club list below and let me know ASAP if any changes need to be made to your club listing for the T-shirt.

3) Let me know you are coming (either individually, or someone from your club can give me a rough estimate of how many people from your club will be able to make it), and put it on your calendar. It will really help us to have a head count to plan for.

4) Plan to wear your club T-shirt if you have one, and bring some homebrew if you have any ready to drink.
 5) Your favorite sampling glass and a lawn chair will also be very helpful.

6) Prepare yourself to eat some great food, drink some great homebrew, and meet some great people / fellow homebrewers from all around the state in a fun,
non-competitive environment.

7) I will be doing the T-shirts a bit different this year.  In the past I have taken orders, with the expectation that I would see people (or fellow club members) at the Brewers Cup a few weeks later, but this hasn't been the case.  Instead, I end up with a bunch of shirts that have been ordered and paid for, but no extra money for shipping them (and yes, if you ordered a shirt last year and didn't get it, I still have it).  So this year, I will just provide the information for ordering the shirts yourself from the website.  I will be making some updates to the shirt design and club list for the 2010 version. These are high quality, professionally designed shirts with the event logo and club listing printed on the back and a small logo printed on the front.

DIRECTIONS:
Below is a link to a Google Map of Sun King.  The brewery is fairly easy to find, but College Avenue is a one-way North at that point, which can make it tricky to get to and may cause multiple trips around the block.  So, the best way to get there is as stated below.

 - Coming from the South, it is really easy!  From either 65 North or 70 East, get off at the Washington Street exit.  Turn left (heading West), go under the overpass and turn right (heading North) on College Avenue.  Go about a block and a half and turn right into the Sun King parking lot (see photo below).
 - Coming from the North on either 65 South or 70 West, look for the Michigan / Ohio Streets off shoot (road running right next to the interstate).  Get off on the Ohio Street exit.  As it winds around and heads West, the cross street at the light will be College Avenue.  Easley Winery will be on your right and Sun King will be on your left, BUT, you can't turn left due to it being a one-way street.  So, immediately beyond the light, look for an alley heading South.  Turn left (heading South) on to this alley, then go to the next alley and turn left again (heading back East).  This takes you back to College Avenue.  Proceed directly across the street into the Sun King parking lot.  Below is what you are looking for, except they now have a logo on the building.

Voting Results, June Events, and the Newsletter

Hey Crew, I just wanted to get everyone up-to-date going into the long weekend.

I will not send out another email with the Newsletter Link,so just look for it tomorrow at www.fossils.org or on the FOSSILS Facebook group.


Voting Results:
Voting went well overall with 29 votes for Sunday, 11 for Saturday and 2 abstaining.  The Exec committee will confer to release updates to the calendar.  Remember, the next club meeting isn't until July!

FOSSILS/LAGERS Campout 2010 Addendum

Well the time is finally here!  Tomorrow, Friday May 28th is the opening day of the Friday, Saturday and half a day Sunday campout.  The planning committee has done a spectacular job in pulling this thing together and we can look forward to some great homebrew, fantastic food, and relaxing fellowship.

The flier includes directions, what to bring, food plans, etc.  You probably already know the drill. 
We are supposed to have wonderful weather, and I am excited.  Here's a couple of things that you might not think to bring, but would be helpful:
A drinking vessel for beer.
A mug for Saturday and Sunday morning coffee.
Bug spray
Sunscreen
Fishing poles
RAFFLE ITEMS!!!!  Please bring Raffle Items and some cash to buy raffle tickets!
Here's a selfish request of mine.  I would love to get together with any musicians coming to the campout and play some music this weekend.  I'm bringing my bass guitar and a small practice amp.  If you play an instrument, bring it and let's jam!

Tie Breaker Vote!

At the conclusion of some cross-communication within the Exec. Members, we've decided to hold the tie breaker vote to choose a meeting date starting this week.  An email of FAQ's should be going out some time Monday/Tuesday.  We will try to cover all of the topics that we've discussed in the past meetings. 

What:
       Vote to move meetings to Sundays or Keep Saturday

Choices: 
  • Saturday with Large meetings in Prost Small meetings (4 times/yr) in the back of Prost
  • Sunday in Prost (no food service, bring your own food)
When:
  • VOTING OPENS TUESDAY EVENING, MAY 18th @Richo's
  • Exec. Meeting, Wednesday May 19th, 7pm - Voting is open for as long as the meeting lasts.
  • Absentee:  Ballots will be available behind the bar at Richo's starting Tuesday Evening.
  • Email:  Email me via this link   (fossils.editor@gmail.com in case the link doesn't work on your browser)
    • Include the names of each person voting and each person's vote.  Please, include "my vote" in the "Subject:" line. Do not email my personal account or my Facebook account with your vote.
  • VOTING WILL CLOSE AT 9PM TUESDAY, MAY 25TH

Who can vote:

Any member, spouse, drinking age dependent FOSSIL member who's dues are paid up.  If you are not sure if this is you, contact me or Debbie Fraizer to check.  Please start by checking the email from the last meeting announcements, there is a spreadsheet of names.  I will collect all ballots and emails. Any person voting and not on the list will have their vote set aside and not counted.  I will try to let anyone emailing a vote know early if they are not on the paid member list, but I can give no promises that this will be timely.

How's it work? (my daughter's favorite saying)

You cast the vote, I filter the votes between paid members and dinosaur food, and I pass the votes to Debbie for counting.  The plan is to attempt to get the results of the vote announced next Wednesday evening via email.

What happens next?

I'm going to have a beer.... Then I will post this note on www.fossils.org and Facebook.
We will discuss at the Exec meeting this week when want to move the meeting "if" Sunday is chosen.  I will update the club Calendars and post the results, including the effective date, May 26th.

Last meeting recap!

Just a quick recap of last Saturday's meeting:

The Vote was held to choose a day for Future FOSSILS meetings.  The voted ended late in the meeting with a tie vote (20/20) for Saturday and Sunday.  This will probably be the main discussion of the next Exec. meeting, but it is safe to say that we will not have a vote to break the tie at the May Camp-out.

Special thanks to everyone that chose to get their dues caught up for the year.

2010 FOSSILS/LAGER Picnic
"Summer Picnic
The committee for the Summer Picnic met
early February to decide on the site and time
for the Summer Picnic. This year the picnic
will be held May 28th-30th at Flat Rock
Estates in Henryville, IN. Due to the upcoming
AHA conference, Memorial Day weekend was
the only time that was available. The fish fry
is returning this year for the picnic. We are
working with the Flat Rock folks to have
additional restroom facilities. The next picnic
meeting will be Wednesday March 24th at the
BBC Tap Room at 7:00PM. We will need
volunteers for Treasurer, clean up, raffle
tickets, tent set-up and etc."

Greetings fellow brewers,
On behalf of the Bluegrass Brewing Co. in Louisville KY, at the brewing corner of Clay and Main. I would
like to invite anyone who wishes to brew a batch in the brewery to come down on Sat April 24th. The
Louisville Ale Club began this event several years ago to pay homage to brewers. The Louisville Ale Club
brings lots of food to snack on while the brewing takes place. The brewery will provide 2400 gallons of 185
degree water for brewing, cold water for chilling, fresh yeast, lots of space, beer for purchase, bags of base
malt may be purchased at cost, and several hop varieties will be available for purchase as well. There is also a
homebrew shop right around the corner for other needs (My Old KY Homebrew). All you need to bring is
your equipment and a great love of beer. Please give yourselves plenty of time to get here, the Mini-Marathon
is run the same day and several streets are blocked off near the brewery.
I hope to see every homebrew club in the region represented.

Infinite Wisdom Weekend



To celebrate the release of our specialty Belgian-style ale, Infinite Wisdom Tripel, Upland is bringing
world renowned artist Norton Wisdom and Chicago's premier progressive bluegrass band, Cornmeal, to
Bloomington


Norton Wisdom is a good friend of the brewery, and his work is featured on the label of our Infinite
Wisdom Tripel (as well as our Dantalion Dark Wild Ale and Double Dragonfly Imperial IPA). Wisdom
does all his painting to music, and once a piece is completed, the canvas is wiped clean, leaving only a
high res digital photo as testimony to his masterpieces!
On Friday March 26th, beginning at 7pm, Upland will host an exhibition of Wisdom's work in our
Bloomington banquet hall. Wisdom himself will be there to discuss his works and meet his fans, and prints
of his work will be available for purchase.
The excitement of Wisdom's work is not only in the final product, but in the process, which you'll be able
to see first-hand the following night, Saturday, March 27. Wisdom will be painting original art to the
sounds of Zion Crossroads and Cornmeal at Jake's Nightclub in Bloomington, beginning at 7pm.
This is also the official kickoff for our Infinite Wisdom Tripel (which you can probably tell was named
in honor of the artist). Infinite Wisdom Tripel is a strong Belgian-style ale that has a long fermentation
period using classic Belgian yeasts. The nose contains banana and citrus notes while a complex fruitiness
and light warming sensation are experienced upon tasting. Like many Belgian Tripels, Infinite Wisdom is
strong but delectably drinkable.
Tickets to the show are $10 in advance, and $12 day of. Tickets are available online at uplandbeer.com or
at Upland's Bloomington Tap Room, Indy Tasting Room, or Jake's Nightclub.

Bourbon Barrel Project Brew Date and Info

FOSSILS BARREL PROJECT

Fellow FOSSILS,
As many of you know, Woodford Reserve has donated barrels to over 10 Indiana homebrew clubs.  Each club is making a barrel of bourbon barrel-aged beer of their choice.  Five gallons of each barrel will be sent to the Indiana State Fair for analysis
The FOSSILS have agreed to participate and feel that we have an edge due to our previous barrel experiences.  We have set a date for the brewing of the barrel beer and are also planning to make some additional beer to supplement our future meeting needs.
WHEN & WHERE
The brewing will be at Bob & Maureen Capshew's barn (7720 Corydon Ridge Road) on Sunday, March 14, 2010.  We plan to begin at noon.  Please note that this is the day after the FOSSILS regular March meeting.
WHAT ARE WE BREWING?
Our barrel beer (50 gallons) is a Belgian Trappist ale similar to Roquefort 10.  The recipe is from Ron Downer.  Ron, who many of you know, is a retired professional brewer who has made this recipe several times.  We will use the 60 gallon mash tun for this batch.  Scott Boyer has cultured some Trappist yeast for this batch.
We are also making a lower gravity ale from the second runnings and additional grain as needed.  Choices for this beer are Belgian dubbel and Belgian pale ale.  The size and type of smaller beer will depend on the participation rate described below.


HOW CAN I PARTICIPATE?
We need to get an accurate count of participants so that the beer gods and goddesses line up properly for our special brew.  We need the following:
Brewers - A brewer will need to bring a propane tank, propane burner and a 15 gallon kettle.  Some of the brewers also need mash tuns that can hold enough grain to make 10 gallons of beer for the smaller beer. 
Fermenters – Since this will be a massive amount of beer, we need some people to volunteer to bring carboys for the small beer.  These fermenters will need to take the carboys home and keg the beer at the appropriate time.
Assistant Brewers – Assistant brewers are needed to stir wort, lift kettles, clean equipment, dump grains, etc.
Please let us know if you are able to participate and what role you can play so we can finalize the recipe sizes and gather the required ingredients.

Bockfest 2010 - Saturday March 6th

I would like to invite you and your fellow homebrewers to
participate in a special bock-only homebrew competition.  The
Bloatarian Brewing League will be sponsoring the 2010 Bockfest
homebrew competition on Saturday March 6th, 2010.  This
bock-only competition will be held at Bockfest Hall in
downtown Cincinnati and is part of the weekend long
celebration of all things bock.

Online registration for entries, judges, and stewards is open.
The entry deadline is Friday February 26th, 2010.  For
additional details visit:

The Bockfest Competition is strictly limited to the following
categories as defined in the 2008 BJCP Style Guidelines.

 5A - Maibock/Helles Bock
 5B - Traditional Bock
 5C - Doppelbock
 5D - Eisbock
 15C - Weizenbock
 22* - Smoked and Wood Aged (bocks)
 23* - Specialty (bocks)

 * Base style must be 5A, 5B, 5C, 5D, or 15C and must be
  clearly indicated on the entry.

SPECIAL PRIZE: The Christian Moerlein brewing company will
again select one entry from the 5B (Traditional Bock) category
to be used as the basis for a special 2011 Bock release.

We are currently looking for entries, judges, and stewards for
the event. The competition is BJCP-sanctioned, and BJCP points
will be awarded.

2010 Funky & Pungent Winners

A great time was had at our January meeting.  Funky and Pungent was the adventure as always!  The winners is as follows:

HELP FOSSILS CELEBRATE 20 YEARS OF SEEKING, DRINKING & BREWING QUALITY BEER

When the ball dropped in Times Square at midnight on January 1, 2010, it not only heralded the onset of a fresh decade, it also marked a significant FOSSILS milestone—our club’s 20th anniversary year.

According to legend and lore chronicling the origins of FOSSILS, founding members found themselves mysteriously drawn to the fossil beds at the Falls of the Ohio on a sunny fall afternoon in 1990 where they happened upon a magical Fehr’s bottle opener firmly lodged in the ancient bedrock... 

OK, so that’s not exactly how the story goes.  But stay tuned throughout the year for real tales of the early days of FOSSILS and our illustrious founding members.

To celebrate FOSSILS and 20 years of beer, friendships, and memories (though some of them admittedly fuzzy) the club has generated, I’m heading up the FOSSILS 20th Anniversary Party Squad (TAPS).  This group will lead a variety of initiatives and activities during 2010 marking this monumental observance and, of course, likely plan some sort of celebratory shindig later in the year.
Interested in playing along with TAPS?   Let me know at the January FOSSILS meeting on 1/9 or drop me a line at BethBHoward@hotmail.com or through Facebook.  We’ll find a time for TAPS to gather over a few pints, chat through ideas and start framing up plans for a great year.       Cheers! -Beth Howard

FWD>Wine Tasting, Thursday, January 14th from 5 - 8 PM

Join us on January 14th from 5 - 8 PM as our friends from the Carroll Company stop in for a great wine tasting.  Here is the lineup:

Kiona Riesling - Smooth, light, spicy flavors; slightly sweet with enough acid to balance the sugar.

Hedges CMS White - A seamless combination of pear, pineapple, gooseberry, banana & wet straw on the nose, following through on the palate. Crisp acidity is balanced by sweetness of ripe fruit & a nicely viscous mouth-feel. Grapes were sourced from four Columbia Valley vineyards: Bacchus, Dionysus, Destiny Ridge & Arete. 77% Sauvignon Blanc, 21% Chardonnay & 2% Marsanne.

Serena - A fun, slightly sweet wine to be served slightly chilled. A perfect match for desserts or for sipping.

Ali Sangiovese - This is a dark ruby-color wine, with appealing scents of black and red cherries and warm spices. Juicy and tart, it's all about simple fresh-cherry fruit and zippy acidity in a nicely balanced package. Simple, low-end Sangiovese, on the modest side, but its good quality makes it a fair ringer for a decent Chianti.

Foppiano Lot 96 - The blend in this wine avails you to an unctuous, food friendly experience. Sangiovese plays a big part in structure as well as a dynamic fruit component. Soft, ready to drink and very supple. 28% Sangiovese, 19% Petite Sirah, 17% Zinfandel, 14% Carignane, 10% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc.

ChocoVine - ChocoVine is a fine French Cabernet subtly combined with a rich dark chocolate from Holland, paired together to create a decadent, silky smooth drink. It can be served on the rocks or as the main ingredient to an array of sinful cocktails.

Rum Chata - Master blender Thomas Maas of Agave Loco Brands has combined Horchata, a sweet, cold beverage made from rice, cinnamon, sugar, vanilla and real dairy cream, with five-times distilled premium Caribbean rum to create Rum Chata. The result is a creamy, smooth after-dinner drink that also helps counteract the effects of eating hot, spicy food.
